I do not know what the world's longest beach is, but it isn't Copacabana in Rio. Copacabana in only 4 km long.
Marina beach is often (but wrongly) referred to as the world's second longest beach
[edit]This is often mentioned in tourist guides etc. made in Chennai, but according to other Wikipedia articles this is not true.
120 km long beach: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CoxsBazar
90 km long beach: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beach
88 km long beach: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ninety_Mile_Beach%2C_New_Zealand
18 km long beach: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patara_Beach
etcetera. I'm sorry for the Chennaiites, but it's nonsense to refer to marina beach as the longest or second longest beach in the world.
You should also consider:
254 km long beach: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Praia_do_Cassino
I think this is really the one!!
- I have removed the claim, and added a paragraph saying why the claim is wrong, citing beaches from the Beach articles' "beaches which are claimed to be the "World's longest". There are several there which are clearly longer than the Marina and there is no reason why Marina Beach is to be called the "second longest". If someone can prove otherwise, please do so. - rabin 07:13, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
203.196.167.245 08:52, 30 July 2007 (UTC) There are several explored and unexplored islands, which would have a stretch of over 100 Kms. I understand that the length of the beach is not the stretch, but the distance of the mean water level from the start of the beach. It is therefore measured perpendicular to the coastline. That is what makes Marina beach the second longest beach in the world
[19th Sep 2007] That is precisely correct. It is the length of the beach (more than 1/2km) and not the length of coast line. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 199.106.103.250 (talk) 21:45, 19 September 2007 (UTC)
- Have added sources for the claim. However, I have retained the controversy section, as I still feel like wanting more sources and as this requires more clarifications. Rasnaboy (talk) 09:10, 23 October 2011 (UTC)
long walk to reach the sea
[edit]initially before the construction of the madras port, the sea was very near to the beach road but it is not so now.why if any one can answer my question piz mail to my address.9bharan_psg@yahoo.co.in

- The construction of the port resulted in the coastline changes over the period. That's the very reason how the beach was formed. Have found the source and have included in the 'History' section. However, we need more details and sources for an elaborate description. - Rasnaboy (talk) 03:07, 2 October 2011 (UTC)
Length
[edit]How long is the beach - 13 or 4.5 kms? I think it might be the second largest beach. It is so often claimed so, can this be verified? - 155.69.5.234 05:20, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
- I have updated with 12km, taken from the official Tamilnadu Tourism website. ɤіɡʍаɦɤʘʟʟ 19:54, 8 May 2007 (UTC)
- I dont know hot TN tourism came up with a figure of 12km unless it includes Besant Nagar/Elliots beach. Its not more than 5km of uninterrupted shoreline. I dont know if the TN tourism site can be trusted, especially with contents like Watching the sun set and rise from the beach is an enthralling experience, when its not possible to watch the sunset at the beach in Chennai-- PlaneMad|YakYak 05:40, 9 May 2007 (UTC)
- Quite true. But then how to we source 5km? I don't think measuring on wikimapia is a good reference. This was the only "reliable" source (as in "official") I could come up with. (It is funny that they talk about watching sunset. Didn't notice that.) ɤіɡʍаɦɤʘʟʟ 00:00, 10 May 2007 (UTC)
- PlaneMad, why is it not possible to watch the sunset at Marina Beach? Never been there during that time, so sorry if the question sounds stupid. The Silent Contributor (talk) 12:08, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

- Quite simply cause chennai is on the east coast, so the sun sets into the land, not into the sea ;) -- PlaneMad|YakYak 16:13, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
- Eeeek!!! (Kicks himself for not having thought of it earlier) Thanks anyway!! The Silent Contributor (talk) 06:05, 23 April 2008 (UTC)
Too many pics
[edit]I have just removed these two pics from the article. 1) The photos are really harsh and are of poor technical quality. 2) No encyc value whatsoever. Can we please have some nice photos of the beach instead of waves/sun/sand. The marina is all about the crowd and atmosphere -- PlaneMad|YakYak 18:02, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
- While I agree these pics are substandard, thanks to whoever uploaded the current pics in the article. Most of them are useful. Cribananda (talk) 22:25, 11 June 2009 (UTC)
- It appears that a photo of the Mahatma Gandhi statue is conspicuously missing from the article. Difficult to get one now that it is shrouded in steel and plastic.Marcus334 (Talk) 22:00, 28 November 2012 (UTC)
Many Images
[edit]Apart from the image in infobox and the panorama, there are about 37 pictures. Do these many images required, eventhough commons category is placed in EL section? I think 10 -15 images will be fine. Otherwise it seems to mirror like a mix of wikipedia and wikivoyage. --βα£α(ᶀᶅᶖᵵᵶ) 22:25, 3 January 2014 (UTC)

Second Longest Beach
[edit]@Ronherry:. That the Marina is the world's second longest is a bit dubious. The next question that arises is "in terms of what?" At 13 km, it's undoubtedly the longest urban beach in the country. However, worldwide there are several beaches that are several tens of kilometers long, including Cox Bazar, Ninety Mile Beach (there are two in this namesake), Praia do Cassino Beach, Long Beach, Virginia Beach, South Padre Island, and Playa Novillero, to name a few. Even if it is the world's second longest urban beach, I don't find any source that lists Marina along with the the longest urban beach. Moreover, most of these sources aren't statistical but only of travelogue kind. We need to find a better source yet. Rasnaboy (talk) 11:44, 9 July 2022 (UTC)
