Holiday Hi-Jynx
[edit]In the article it says that: Holiday Hi-Jynx...isn't re-aired in English
But I have seen it on Tooonami UK. Does anyone have further information on this? Sonic Mew 21:01, May 17, 2005 (UTC)
- I kept editting it as "isn't re-aired in USA", but I don't know who always change it back!! =o=|||
Ive seen that chritmas ephisode with jynx in it on kidswb Im it may have just been one time but they aired the ephisode in america

I second that. Jynx looks better purple anyway. RiffRaff1138 July 1, 2005 03:56 (UTC)
- It isn't the matter of looking better or not lol. Jynx is ugly anyway. Its the politically correctness that counts! jynx
All I can do is laugh and shake my head... I didn't even know blackface was a racial thing until I came to the Internet, and it wasn't until a week or so ago that I learned just what it was (I had, however, seen some of the blackface stuff from ages past within the past year). Dang, Mr. Popo, Jynx... I never knew! I just knew they looked kind of freaky. Popo, however, I liked, unlike Jynx... *shivers* T.J. Fuller, Jr. 08:43, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit]In the US will these two episodes be aired?? Jynx
- As Jynx is purple, it is likely, (and as May's last Contest challenge, it will be hard for 4Kids to get around.) But we won't know for sure until we get to that point in the dub. Sonic Mew | talk to me 21:36, July 25, 2005 (UTC)
If Jynx was still the colour black in those two episodes would 4kids still air it???
Also why in Japan did they change the color of Jynx if the problem was only in America and maybe England??
- a decsent company would not want to offend anyone.
- It doesn't seem to be a problem in England anyway, since we get "Holiday Hi-Jynx", but the above comment is corret. Sonic Mew | talk to me 19:51, August 13, 2005 (UTC)
This may or may not be interesting but pokémon.com still displays the original, black-faced image. --Celestianpower hab 20:01, 13 August 2005 (UTC)
- I have checked Pokemon.com like a hundred times, and there is no black. jynx 21:14, 22 October 2005 (UTC)
- AND THE ANSWER IS IT DID NOT AIR!!
and it would be pointless if they show it because it won't fit the storyline anymore jynx 21:11, 7 March 2006 (UTC)
Pokémon figurine
[edit]WHY DID THEY BAN THE JYNX Pokémon figurine COULDN'T THEY JUST PAINT OVER THE BLACK WITH SOME PURPLE??
It isn't even re-produced in Japan... and Nintendo of USA "claims" that Jynx is "not popular" in USA. XD
- Well obviously they wouldn't admit their real reasoning. But re-painting costs a lot of money - Jynx certainly still isn't among the most popular so would it be worth it? Plus, the purple was only added in the third generation, so it has not had effect yet. Perhaps future models will be sneaked back in, but we don't know if the Jynx contest episode will air yet and they won't want more controversy. Sonic Mew | talk to me 19:49, August 13, 2005 (UTC)
- Seriously, even Jynx fans wouldn't buy Jynx stuff. I'm actually not joking... Only obsess Pokemon COLLECTORS would be bothered. (why am I replying an ancient question?...anyway) jynx 21:16, 22 October 2005 (UTC)
- Jynx figurines were actually released around 2000 with the other 151 Pokemon at the time. If you search on [Ebay] you will see they are black-skinned and not purple-skinned. Which means they were available prior to the Jynx controversy. Which makes one wonder if they're rare now. -24.92.41.95 19:22, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
I beg to differ, jynx. I would most certainly buy Jynx stuff if I saw it. Leastwise, I would buy merchandise with the original, black-skinned Jynx. I could really care less about anything with the new purple design, if only because I am still annoyed about the controversy. –– Czar Baldy Bald IV 16:01, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
Jynx figurines (the original version) are still available in the USA, however, only online. The Japanese pack including the original Jynx and Mr. Mime is sold all over the internet, and the solo pack that Tomy makes of the original Jynx is still available online. Granted, both version are Japanese, they're still sold in the America's. In fact, I got the original Jynx from the solo Tomy packs a few weeks ago. I'm just starting to collect the Tomy ones now. I'd like to know where to buy them instead of wasting all that money on shipping. :p - Yoshirox10
sources
[edit]These three passages seem to be unsourced.
- The article is considered by fans of Pokémon as one of the main reasons for why a later episode featuring Jynx (titled Koori no dokutsu) featuring Jynx later on did not air in English, and the sole reason for why Holiday Hi-Jynx has not been aired again in the US. Similarly, the article is generally attributed as the reason for why Jynx was one of two Pokémon figurines (along with Elekid, because of the safety hazard posed by its plug-shaped head) that was not available for purchase at the New York Pokémon Center.
- It is also because of this that many believe that Smoochum, its pre-evolved form, has less of a human form, although the truth was that Smoochum's original design was pinkish-purple--never an offensive colour.
- It is infamous for being the only Pokémon not to have a figurine in the American Pokémon Center due to the above controversy.
"Generally considered"? "Generally attributed"? "Many believe"? "Infamous"? These are POV assertions that need some kind of supporting info. Thanks, -Willmcw 19:29, August 15, 2005 (UTC)
- If we don't find sources shortly then I'm going to remove the statements. Thanks, -Willmcw 18:00, August 18, 2005 (UTC)
- OK, I'm going to remove the unsourced text. -Willmcw 21:41, August 22, 2005 (UTC)
- I don't think these are from anywhere, its just from forums and it soon became general knowledge. None of the text in this page comes from any of the websites listed! The card series with Jynx which are listed in Wikibook came from http://pokecardex.com and http://pokemon.marriland.com (PS: Why are the links to the pictures are deleted? Reason is requested for the above incident.)jynx 17:57, 9 September 2005 (UTC)
- Personally, I disagree with putting "many believe" stuffs on this page, because they are unconfirmed stuff. I need a reason of why "many beleive"s should remain on this page. jynx
in pokemon snap for the n64 it had the blacked skin jynx or it could have been a color font problem or laziness to do that but to comite a thing saying that pokemon is racist and change a pokemon is just wrong. if u feel bad u say well i have an issue with the pokemons figure and feel alittle discruage not sue them
Fairness of tone
[edit]The section titled "Controversy", particularly the first paragraph, radiates a completely dismissive tone to the notion of Jynx being blackface inspired. It's practically hostile towards it- "Having black skin does not show any significance in changing the skin color at all because if Mr Mime has a white color and is not censored, why should jinx? This censorship would be the true idea of racism because the mere color of black is attributed the the African race - which is not a fair thing at all." The facts are presented fairly evenly, but it emanates a feeling that Wikipedia does not have any respect at all for any possible disagreement with its preferred stance. Daft Neophyte 23:01, 14 July 2007 (UTC)
- I removed that entire sentence, it is someone's opinion and not appropriate for an article to begin with. Tamajared 20:29, 15 July 2007 (UTC)
Why redirect
[edit]Why has this article been turned into a redirect to a short entry in another article? I don't see any AfD notice or prior discussion. ·:· Will Beback ·:· 19:49, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
- The Pokemon project has decided to merge all but a couple of the 493 individual articles into twenty five lists. This article is one of the ones that has been merged. TTN 19:56, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
- Where was the content from this article merged? It's not in the list. ·:· Will Beback ·:· 20:32, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
- That is really the only relevant information (the racism point may be added if correctly sourced). For fan information, see Bulbapedia. TTN 20:52, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
- It appears as well-sourced as the rest of the Pokemon material. I'll move the controversy material to the list article. If there are sourcing questions we can address them here or there. ·:· Will Beback ·:· 21:04, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
Jynx (Pokémon) -> Jynx

The result of the move request was what Kung Fu Man said. —harej (talk) (cool!) 00:28, 1 August 2009 (UTC)
Jynx (Pokémon) → Jynx —
- Suggesting this move because the disambig page only mentions the genus, which is for Wryneck, and a see also for Jinx (disambiguation). It seems we could easily have the page moved to that disambig space and just have a "Not to be confused with Jinx" at the top of the article. Any objections?--Kung Fu Man (talk) 02:07, 23 July 2009 (UTC)
- Sounds good. Artichoker[talk] 02:08, 23 July 2009 (UTC)
- But is the Pokemon a dominant meaning over the species of bird? Anthony Appleyard (talk) 20:39, 23 July 2009 (UTC)
- If the species article was actively called Jynx I would say no, but the article itself is Wryneck. Going with a google test:
- Jynx+genus = 6,410
- Jynx+bird = 44,000
- Jynx+Pokemon = 76,700
- And checking article stats for June 2009:
- Jynx (genus) = 117
- Wryneck = 1399
- Jynx (Pokémon) = 3926
- And that's considering that Jynx was not an article again until the middle of June, so as these numbers show the Pokemon is the most common item in relation to the term Jynx both on Google and on Wikipeida. Would "For the species of bird, see Wryneck" at the top of the article be satisfactory compromise?--Kung Fu Man (talk) 21:07, 23 July 2009 (UTC)
- Support. The dab page is not needed in this case; a hatnote to wryneck (and possibly jinx) is sufficient. (Although every time I've argued that lately, someone has started to add stuff on the dab page to make it necessary.) Anyway, based on the statistics looks like that this page is primary topic anyway. Jafeluv (talk) 22:55, 23 July 2009 (UTC)
- Support. It looks like it wont effect anything too harshly. --Blake (talk) 21:20, 26 July 2009 (UTC)
- So long as we have something akin to For the magical curse, see Jinx; for the bird, see Wryneck I will support. {{Otheruses}} is a wonderful friend. MelicansMatkin (talk, contributions) 01:38, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

History-merge?
[edit]- As I said on WP:POKE/Charizard's talk page, I would be fine with deleting the page, but is there any way this page's history can be move to the real Jynx article? Maybe move this page to Jynx, and then revert to the recent revision? I dont know if that would work or not. Blake (Talk·Edits) 22:18, 31 August 2009 (UTC)
I feel like I have failed this article
[edit]The only thing standing in its way from B-class and possibly GA, is the manga. I dont know what to reference though. It doesnt say "Jynx did this", but instead it says "Jynx can do this". I might have to re-read that part where Jynx appears to figure out what chapter to reference. Blake (Talk·Edits) 00:11, 4 October 2009 (UTC)
Redirect Smoochum to here?
[edit]I think we should cover Smoochum here as a form of Jynx, and redirect it here as opposed to the list (this could be done with other articles, such as Pichu/Raichu, Riolu, Charmander/Charmeleon, Mime Jr., and Igglybuff/Wigglytuff). - The New Age Retro Hippie used Ruler! Now, he can figure out the length of things easily. 06:41, 15 October 2009 (UTC)
- I considered that with Mime Jr., but backed off it, especially since Mime Jr. was only a "baby" of it under certain circumstances. With Koffing/Weezing and Abra/Kadabra/Alakazam the reception spanned all characters for the most part; here it's isolated to each particular version (and in the case of Pichu, it has its own reception unique from Pikachu, as does Raichi. Same for the rest when you examine them). Mentioning them with a "see also" should be fine, anything more would come across as undue weight.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 11:31, 15 October 2009 (UTC)
Why is Ji(y)nx purple instead of the original black?
[edit]Whoever got the idea of making Ji(y)nx purple has no design skills at all.
Ji(y)nx looks better black.
And why are episodes featuring Ji(y)nx being banned? There was absolutely no need for most of the episodes that were banned to be banned. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Fifteen501 (talk • contribs) 21:55, 6 May 2010 (UTC)
- Silly people thought Jynx being black was racist, so they changed it. The episodes featuring the black design no longer aired. But Wikipedia isn't the place to rant about that. Blake (Talk·Edits) 23:21, 6 May 2010 (UTC)
Ganguro
[edit]- moved from article
Shouldn't there be a reference of some sort to Ganguro, which was at its most popular (in Japan) when the pokemon games were created? If you type Ganguro into google and look at the images as they pop up, the first one looks almost exactly like Jynx. Given that Japan is 99% Japanese, it seems odd that they'd even be aware of archaic american stereotypes, while Ganguro was huge around the time the game came out (and is still around today). This seems a glaring omission, considering how I found got this idea from Bulbapedia, which is not supposed to be more accurate and cognitive of the facts than the original wikipedia. Why do you have to find this alternative and seemingly more likely theory elsewhere? I don't know how to go about adding this, but I feel it needs to be done. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.108.28.141 (talk • contribs)
- If you can find a reliable source that verifies this, please add it to the article. Melicans (talk, contributions) 14:44, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
- Ms Carole Boston Weatherford did not provide any reliable source to back up her speculations either, yet her OPINION is reflected in the article - only because she got her point of view published. Other perceptions of this pokemon (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Jynx_%28Pok%C3%A9mon%29#Controversy) aren't mentioned at all! How is that a neutral position? To be clear here: bulbapedia is world-renown knowledge center regarding all facts about pokemon and Carole Boston Weatherford is a children book writer with no education in Japan culture. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.88.5.60 (talk) 07:01, 30 October 2010 (UTC)
- Bulbapedia has different rules then Wikipedia. On Wikipedia facts need to be verified by reliable sources. If no reliable sources say Jynx is based off Ganguro, then it doesn't belong in the article. There is no way to get around it. Blake (Talk·Edits) 19:04, 30 October 2010 (UTC)

What about Yama-uba
[edit]I heard recently that Jynx might be related to the mythological beast Yama-uba, the mountain Crone. It's not just bulbapedia. A youtube video by Matthew Patrick, titled "Game Theory: Pokemon Racism, Jynx Justified" also confirms this.
- More over Hild and her daughter Urd in Oh My Goddess! are both dark skinned and being from 1988 predate Jynx by several years so the old defense that Jynx was based on Hild of Norse mythology may also be valid.--67.42.65.212 (talk) 11:28, 10 March 2014 (UTC)
Possible new Evolution
[edit]Just saw on Tumblr somebody took a picture from a Japanese magazine that shows Jynx, Smoochum, and arrows pointing from them in their evolutionary line, and then it points to a new evolution, a more female-humanoid looking Pokemon. I can't confirm if it's legit but I just saw that. --Matt723star (talk) 16:19, 26 March 2013 (UTC) Edit: here's the URL to the picture I found it on: [1] --Matt723star (talk) 16:22, 26 March 2013 (UTC)
Doesn't look like an official source, which would surely make the Pokemon look more prominent in the 3D images. Admittedly, it's nowhere near as bad a hoax as the supposed starter designs from Gen V. Such horrible Japanese!128.195.166.25 (talk) 20:35, 23 May 2013 (UTC)
Because the Japanese would of course know an obscure symbol of white-on-black racism from a century back on the other end of the planet?

Lead and infobox
[edit]- Seems fine.
Design and characteristics
[edit]Originally called "Rujura" in Japanese
- In the lead, the Japanese name is introduced as "Rougela", with the Hepburn romanization "Rūjura" (with a long u sound). Here, the name is given as "Rujura" (with a short u sound). Either change to "Rougela" or "Rūjura".- "pre-evolution" is Pokémon jargon, it should be explained.
Jynx Pokémon walk in a dance-like fashion
- I'm unsure what the word "Pokémon" is doing here?Red & Blue, as well as in Leaf Green
- rewrite asRed, Blue, and LeafGreen
- Does any further explanation exist for "strange orbs"? It's really vague, and I'm not really sure what I'm supposed to be picturing.
Appearances
[edit]- You've already linked Red and Blue once
- There are a few instances where you're italicizing "and" in "Pokémon [game 1] and [game 2]" - it shouldn't be italicized as it's not part of the titles.
- It would make more sense to write "the Pokémon Snap games" rather than listing both of them individually, right?
- Italicize
the [[Pokémon (anime)|''Pokemon'' anime]]
Outside of video games, Jynx first appeared in the Pokémon anime in "Holiday Hi-Jynx" when one of Santa Claus's Jynx was separated from him, Ash and friends helped to return the Jynx to her owner.
this feels a bit like a run-on sentence, and its clauses aren't joined together correctlyJynx later appears in episodes of Pokémon: Advanced Generation, with the inoffensive purple skin color
- Whether something is offensive or not is subjective, would consider striking the word "inoffensive" and let readers decide for themselvesJynx has made a number of appearances in the Pokémon Trading Card Game, with the black-skinned design before the Weatherford controversy
- this is the first time Weatherford is mentioned in the article body. Needs to either be explained, or reworded to something like "before the design change"- I think we need to give some (brief) context for vocaloids and Hatsune Miku, we can't expect general readers to know what this means
Controversy and reception
[edit]- Per WP:CRITS, we should avoid using the word "controvery" in the section heading. I think the simplest solution is to just call the section "reception".
- I guess this is not an issue with the article, but it's wild to me that IGN, while criticizing the design for offensiveness, would themselves use the wording "transvestite midget". What the hell.
- Italicize heta-uma per MOS:FOREIGNITALIC and link to heta-uma. I would also suggest giving just a little bit of context for the term, maybe by writing
the humor of heta-uma art
, since we can assume most enwp readers will be unfamiliar with it.
Sources
[edit]- The sources cited all seem fine.
- I spot-checked the use of 10% of the sources at random. The numbers are as of this revision.
- 10, Yahoo. OK.
- 11, TheGamer. OK.
- 27, CBR. OK.
- 37, IGN. OK.
- 38, ScreenRant. OK.
Images
[edit]- Both the images are very reasonable inclusions. No problems here.
- Not part of the GA criteria, but I would recommend adding brief, descriptive alt text to the images for the sake of readers with impaired vision.
