Ed, you asked about this claim:

It has long been a source of consternation to UC members that many Christians impute to the UC the view that Jesus failed, although the UC clearly teaches it was rather John who failed.

I think the reason 'mainstream' Christians impute to the UC the view that Jesus failed, is that the UC teaches that Jesus did not do everything that needed doing, leaving a messiah-type role for Rev. Moon to fill. Historic Christian teaching is that Jesus accomplished everything needed for our salvation; if you say Christ's work is incomplete and we need Rev. Moon as well, that's going to be interpreted as saying that Jesus failed. Maybe you're saying Jesus did everything he could given John the Baptist's failure to support him; even so, it sounds like you're still saying Jesus failed to do everything necessary, just that it wasn't his fault.

Personally, my biggest gripe with the UC on this and most other points of difference is that there was a pretty consistent way of interpreting the life and role of John the Baptist (and Jeus Christ, etc. etc.) for 1,900 years of church history, and then Rev. Moon comes along and says all that is backwards. Putting them side by side, I'm going to stick with all the Christians from the first 1,900 years, rather than massive theological innovations dating from the 20th century (or from the 16th century or the 11th or the 6th, in the case of other innovations). But that's just me. Me and Vincent of Lerins. :-) Wesley 20:27 Feb 18, 2003 (UTC)

Why is this entire article from the Unification Church point of view? I can see a general article on the relationship, with inputs from many different denominations. If we leave it as it is, let's rename it to Unification Church viewpoint on Jesus and John the Baptist. -- Zoe

Zoe, just roll it in with Unification Church.
Either that, or this needs to be a paragraph or two in the longer article on John the Baptist. (Note, the paragraph above this was not written by me.) Vicki Rosenzweig
