Hello and welcome to Wikipedia! Hope you like it here, and stick around. Meelar (talk) 19:22, Dec 26, 2004 (UTC)

Gedday,

thanks for asking me to comment on episiotomy - not my area of expertise - but I think you've improved the article!

The only bit I've got any concern about is this bit here:

"women who had episiotomies had a five times higher rate of uncontrolled bowel movements three months after giving birth compared with the group with no perineum injury."

This comparison should ideally be made on an 'intention to treat' basis. Comparing episiotomies to women with no injury is pretty unhelpful by itself.

By the way, it helps to 'sign' your talk page entries with ~~~~.

best wishes and hope you keep contributing Erich 22:45, 28 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Photos in Taiwan

[edit]

Hello. I have just noticed some of the Taiwanese photos which you have contributed. As a Taiwanese resident, I really appreciate your effort in adding informations of Taiwan to the encylopedia; however, I would think the photos as quite retro and make me think the island is still quite behind. Especially the fortune teller one. :) Would you consider to contribute more updated ones or perhaps temporarily remove them so that people won't get a wrong impression on the island?Mababa 22:25, 31 Dec 2004 (UTC)

After a second thought, I think these are actually quite cute and might not be a bad idea to keep them. Then could you add the years to the descriptions in the articles?Mababa 22:31, 31 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for the comments on Taiwan photography. I do indeed need to make a comment on the age of these photos! Amazingly, though, there was no photo for fortune teller and only light descriptions! So I thought the addition was the least I could do.

It is indeed addictive!

Why not get outside and grab some photos of Taiwan!

Unfortunately, I am in extreme proverty and can not afford a digital camera. All I can do is to put on images that I can found on the internet. I have to say that I like the wedding photo you uploaded most. That is just lovely!!Mababa 23:48, 31 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Wedding pix, incense photo

[edit]

Mind interpretting the wedding photo I posted? I guessed that the couple was at the park to gte their photos taken ONLY. But I see the child and flowers and wonder if maybe there WAS a ceremony in the park? What do you think? How would you caption this photo?

Not at all. I would be happy to. :) It could be a ceremony. However, out-door wedding in Taiwan are unusual. Therefore, it is more likely that the couple were taking wedding portraits in a park which is an extremely common practice. Many couples getting married would talk formal indoor and outdoor portraits. This is a huge bussiness in Taiwan for a long time that Taiwan has accumulated some expertise and is regionally famous for. Therefore, if I were the one captioning the picture, I would probably say something like : "a couple taking outdoor wedding portrait. etc. etc." I hope I have been helpful so far.Mababa 00:59, 1 Jan 2005 (UTC)

My favorite is the religions of china photo with incense. Do you know what religion this temple practices? I can't figure that out.

It is not very obvious which deity the temple is dedicated to, by looking at the photo. However it seemed to me that all the temples with a setting in this style belong to Taoism, which worships various forms of deities. This type of religion is quite common in Taiwan.Mababa 00:59, 1 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Cutaway Earth

[edit]

That's a great diagram you made at Image:Earth-crust-atmosphere-cuta.gif. It's perfect for the Earth article. Thanks for adding it. But I have a question – what is the layer shown above the crust? I thought the crust was the top layer and would include the sea floor and mountains, etc. Is that how it was shown in the USGS original? -- Kbh3rd 14:54, 27 Jan 2005 (UTC)

I liked your suggestion. Have you started a contest yet? --Phil | Talk 12:05, Feb 9, 2005 (UTC)

Just wanted to say that your WS logo concept was inspired. I'm really annoyed that I didn't make the connection to the double helix myself! I agree with the other user that the helix could be toned down a bit somehow (thinner lines perhaps?). In any case, it has made me approach this in a different way now, and I think that the mock-ups sold the concept even more. Cheers! Neolux 11:23, 19 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Hello, I asked wikispecies users to submit final votes over the course of next week - your logo has the highes support yet, so in case that it wins - what a surprise that would be ;) - could you please generate a transparent version with the text? Thanks, Benedikt

standard deviation

[edit]

I fear that the great prominence of the illustration you added in standard deviation, along with the caption you wrote, will further disseminate the naive notion that it is generally the case that 68% of the population is within one SD of the mean, and similarly for two and three. That is of course true of the normal distribution (distributed according to the proverbial bell-shaped curve) but it is nowhere near true of distributions generally, nor of small data sets. I've edited the caption. I think I may put the illustration at a later place in the article. Michael Hardy 22:03, 9 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Jeremy, I have built a replacement image that demonstrates the area under the curve of a normal distribution, built to scale. This should eliminate the complaints posted at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Standard_deviation_diagram.png It's based on PostScript math, so it should be accurate. The image is at http://pbeirne.com/Programming/gaussian.png and the PostScript code is at http://pbeirne.com/Programming/gaussian.ps. I'd be happy to change the ones at normal distribution and standard deviation; let me know.Patbeirne 03:28, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm the one who suggested this on WP:RP, and I want to say that you did a good job on it. :) Thanks. —Mar·ka·ci:2005-02-12 08:00 Z

Hello - I've straightened out the picture's horizon and lowered its saturation using Photoshop, so I would very much appreciate if you would reconsider your vote. Thanks! — Dan | Talk 13:22, 10 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I've rotated it more, per your suggestion. — Dan | Talk 17:19, 10 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Again, per your suggestions, I've adjusted the color balance to avoid a red sky, and weakened the highlights a bit (though the color of the torii was quite natural: it's painted bright orange-red). As for the horizon, perhaps you were looking at a cached version of the image? Photoshop's "measure" tool (and the ruler) told me that the horizon was perfectly horizontal; if you still think it's tilted, I'd appreciate very much if you would upload a corrected version, since I can't seem to get it quite right. Cheers — Dan | Talk 19:58, 10 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Root-canal Graphic

[edit]
  • Thanks for your corrections. These are needed! I want to get this right, so bear with me.
    • Your comments one-by-one:
cavity must be wide open - Easy to fix - *OK
drill seems funny - Should it be like this? [1] - That's better, take note of the neck - it's steel, not hose for vaccum cleaner. (shape it smoother).
endo-instrument is file not needle - See: [2] [3] Do you mean the tip is not slanted? - No, it must be saw-toothed (serrated), not flat (smooth). See sk:Ošetrenie koreňového kanálika and blue instrument at sk:Obrázok:Hoedstrom 08-30.jpg.
rubber filling must be till end of canal - Easy to fix - OK. Make it conical.
  • Support. Great! It's perfect, brief, well-arranged. It's not exact but enough popular. JK, you're skillful. Let me add this picture to Slovak page :-) --Metju12 06:38, 22 Mar 2005 (UTC)
  • Let's talk about molar picture (#2).
  1. There is possibility to fill just one root, but 99% of dentist would fill both, even if there is not inflamation under it (in bone). So make it nice and fill it!
  2. Don't put white line at the end (at the begining blood vesel - it's ok).
  3. You made step (or roughness?) in the forth part. See here. Make it nice smooth.

Arabic manuscript

[edit]

Hi Jeremy, what are your copyright concerns with this image? Dsmdgold 21:57, Mar 21, 2005 (UTC)

Hi, While I understand your colleague's desire to have rights to the image, under Bridgeman, she has no rights to this image. By posting it here, she has all but guaranteed that it will be used elsewhere. I don't see an easy way to get this deleted. If you could get the image out of all the articles, then you might be able to list it on Images for deletion as an orphan. To do that you would need to find a replacement for its use in Herbalism, if it is gone from there I would not revert you removing it from Gallery of illuminated manuscript images. However, that would not stop me or some one else from finding the image and reposting it, in any number of articles in which it would be an appropriate illustration. Dsmdgold 01:22, Mar 22, 2005 (UTC)

Humble Request - POTD

[edit]

Hi Jeremy,

Might it happen that Root Canal be featured for 3/24?

Well technically I'm supposed to select featured pictures for POTD in the order that they get promoted and we have recently had a string of six promotions. However, the guidelines probably haven't considered personal birthday requests, so I don't see why I can't shuffle them a little bit. As it happens the image for the 24th March hasn't been selected yet.

On the other hand, given the current voting, the RootCanalIllustration is a bit borderline for promotion. From the discussion on your talk page, I suspect User:Metju12 objections have been satisfied, so I've dropped him a note to see whether he will withdraw his objection and make the promotion more conclusive. -- Solipsist 23:36, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Well now you've left me in a quandry :) With User:Metju12 updating his vote, I was clearing up the closed WP:FPC nominations so that I could promote your Root Canal in time for tomorrow. And all of sudden I notice there is a whole new illustration.
What to do? I would have thought the new molar version was clearly the better illustration, but it isn't actually the one that most people voted on. If I leave the nomination up a little while longer for people to notice the update, we'll miss your birthday. -- Solipsist 21:19, 22 Mar 2005 (UTC)
OK, I thought you would only promote with unanimous approval and we had a late negative comment. So I've just reverted to the version with consensus. Thanks for all your great work! jk 21:56, 22 Mar 2005 (UTC)
No, unanimous approval isn't required. As with most voting on Wikipedia we tend to go with a loosly defined 'consensus'. There are some examples at the top of the WP:FAC page. Consensus is roughly a 2/3rds majority, but the fewer votes there are, the harder it gets. At the time, I think the vote was on +5/-2, which falls between the two examples at the just enough votes end. In this case I would probably have given the benefit of the doubt, but others might have complained. However, I rather thought both the objections had been addressed. Given the nature of User:Metju12's objection I figured if his vote was switched to support, the vote would be a clear and easy consensus. Then we got User:Bevo's late objection, but at +7/-2 it is still a relatively safe promotion.
On the plus side, Bevo's objection was pretty good, and the new version of the diagram is even better. Its just I now don't know whether I should close the nomination so soon after the update. -- Solipsist 22:30, 22 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Well happy birthday in any case. -- Solipsist 09:14, 23 Mar 2005 (UTC)

RE: Removal of Taiwanese Aborigine Photo

[edit]

In the 19th century it was believed that people were divided into distinct "races" each with their own distinct features. Now it is understood that there is tremendous variation in features - such as skin tone, hight, etc. and that these vary tremendously within groups as well as between them. So, while it might be possible to put a picture of Shaq next to a picture of George Bush and say one exemplifies the "black race" and one exemplifies the "white race" we could find many people who consider themselves black or white but whose features are far less distinct than those two individuals.

I lived with Taiwanese Aborigines for a year, and there were some who were clearly identifiable as Aborigines, but many (most) were not. It is made even more complex by the fact (as is the case between blacks and whites in the US, where most blacks have at least some white ancestors as a result of sexual practices during slavery), most Han Chinese Taiwanese have at least some Aborigine ancestors.

I thus consider it misleading to use a picture in this way, and I feel it diminishes the article to do so. It reduces the complexity of the actual genetic admixture between Taiwanese and Aborigines, presenting "ideal types" of what a stereotypical "Han Chinese" and a stereotypical Aborigine are supposed to look like.

This is made even more complex by the fact that there are various Aborigine ethnic groups and there is considerable variation between them. My Bunun friends were discriminated against by lighter skinned Amis because of the darker color of their skin (even though I've met non-Aborigine Taiwanese who are even darker than most Bunun).

I wrote that these views were 19th century because I've read accounts by turn-of-the-century Japanese anthropologists who tried to define the phenotypical features of each Aborigine ethnic group. Nobody engages in such practices these days in Anthropology, and I did not feel that it was appropriate for an encyclopedia article. I therefore have no intention of "replacing" the photograph with something similar, since I feel that it is wrong to do so. Perhaps a picture of many different Aborigines showing the tremendous variety in how Aborigines look would be more appropriate?

BTW: You are a good photographer and I like your photos - it was the caption and use of this particular photograph that I objected to. I'm sorry if I didn't make my motives clearer, but the edit field didn't leave much room. I hope I have now done so.

kerim 16:59, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Greetings. I have noted that you have readded the photo with a different phrasing. However, I would like to quibble about the fact that we have no idea about the racial background of that english teacher. I can assure you that one of my classmate in my college is one of the trible noble without apparent distinction between the so-called Han(which is actully decendants between Han immigrant and the plane tribe aborigine) and him. I personally do not think that photo is informative. You are trying to reveal the racial difference in Taiwan with a photo we can not realy decide the appropriate texts for it. Let me put it this way, I personally have the skin color similiar with the little girl in your photo but I am not a Bunun, but I could be decendants of some other tribes which I was never made awared of. On the other hand, I do have a relative married to a highlander who has some little hint on his facial feature. The facial feature comparison in this photo is really not informative. It is not precise and incorrect to call those people with a whiter face Han people. The person you characterize as Han could be someone was not awared of her aborigine origin. Please understand it.Mababa 06:50, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I have proposed to replace the photo being discussed since you also seem to agree that this photo does not serve much purpose. I wonder if you can comment you that talk page. Many thanks.Mababa 02:32, 30 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Gerrymandering Image

[edit]

Hey, I was wondering if you could again update the wonderful image you made on Gerrymandering - specifically, the text implies that the redistricting creates districts with different numbers of voters (ie: malapportionment), and while certainly a form of gerrymandering, I think we could make the article even better by having the image make the case that this is not needed.

For example, if the image showed the districts going from 4 even districts of 50/50 support each to one district of 80/20 support and three districts of 40/60, the math would work out such that they could all contain the exact same total number of people as before. There is a discussion going on at Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates because I brought up the idea that maybe we should create a "Featured Diagram" listing similar to the Featured Pictures listing. Thanks for uploading Image:Jeremykemp logo samplemain.gif. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Thank you. Stan 03:57, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Personally I don't much care what license you apply (I've probably reviewed a thousand or more untagged images since I posted this note, am somewhat numbed to the merits of any particular one :-) ), it just needs to follow the requirements of policy. The boilerplate notices aren't always apropos for each image's details, but of course if you don't like getting them, feel free to fix up all your images pre-emptively, so other editors don't have to spend time on them. [edit]

It seems that the article standardized patient takes the majority of its text from a UNC School of Medicine page. I don't believe that the article can avoid this problem simply by quoting and attributing the text. Wikipedia:Copyright problems states that "under fair use guideline, brief selections of copyrighted text may be used, but only with full attribution and only when the purpose is to comment on or criticize the text quoted." Of course, the lack of an explicit copyright notice on the UNC page does not mitigate this problem, either, as "an author does not need to apply for or even claim copyright for a copyright to exist." I wish I didn't have to do this, but I've added a copyright violation notice to the page itself, and I've listed the page on Wikipedia:Copyright problems/2006 March 28. If it happens that you somehow hold the copyright on the text, and you're willing to let Wikipedia reuse it under the GFDL, then please say so on the article's talk page. Otherwise, you or someone else must rewrite the article essentially from scratch, possibly retaining the UNC link as a reference. Thank you for all your other very excellent contributions. --Officiallyover 10:46, 28 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Integrative studies

[edit]

Hi Jeremykemp... =] There has been a recent discussion about our page Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Integrated Science, Business and Technology on our Integrated Science, Business and Technology program. It has been suggested our page be merged with the Integrative studies page, as our 4-year B.S. program is based squarely on the principles. At the moment, I have created a section pointing to two of the first Integrative studies programs of their kind, ISAT at JMU and ISBT at La Salle.

It appears the original intent of your article was theory only. Do you agree it would be appropriate to expand it to include examples of practice as well? Best regards, --qswitch426 14:13, 10 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I was wondering if I could modify your image to make a point on percentile rank and normal curve equivalent. I wanted to use Ncurve2.gif, but I can't find any copyright information for it. I would remove some of the scores from yours and add the normal curve equivalent part. What do you think? Chris53516 13:47, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I didn't hear from you, but since you relinquished copyright, I used it anyway. Sorry. Chris53516 19:30, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi jk,

I absolutely freaking love your photos on the Taiwanese Aborigines page. I think they add immensely to the content. The picture of mother/child with the cloud/fog line visible in the distance is cool, and the dancer photo and the kiddos are cheerful. Later, Ling.Nut 21:08, 27 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Photograph use for educational textbook

[edit]

Dear Jeremy,

I am employed at an educational textbook publishers and I am interested in using a photograph that you have posted showing a placenta after a birth. This would be used in a book for the training and education of those in the public safety field, such as paramedics and other first responders. I would like to get permission to use this image, but would need to send you a copy of our standard permission document. We would be happy to give you full credit for the courtesy. I look forward to hearing your response and thank you.

Best,

Kimberly

Graphics Lab

[edit]

I saw your name listed on Wikiproject Illustration or the list of graphic artists, and I thought I'd let you know that a Graphics Lab has been created on EN. Based on the highly successful French and German graphics labs, it seeks to better organise and coordinate our graphic design and photo-editing efforts. Up until now, there has been no common space on EN where users could ask for maps, charts and other SVG files to be created. What's more, the Graphics Lab has discussion boards, tips, tools and links; in sum, a good common workspace. Come help us out! The infrastucture is already in place, and now we need participants. :) --Zantastik talk 02:09, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:Grenade_training_with_dummy.jpg. You provided a source, but it is difficult for other users to examine the copyright status of the image because the source is incomplete. Please consider clarifying the exact source so that the copyright status may be checked more easily. It is best to specify the exact web page where you found the image, rather than only giving the source domain or the URL of the image file itself. Please update the image description with a URL that will be more helpful to other users in determining the copyright status.

Fair use rationale for Image:NordicTrack_eliptical_trainer_and_woman.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:NordicTrack_eliptical_trainer_and_woman.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. I am sorry that I did not notify you that I created a vector image of your work, but I did properly attribute you and your image. Thanks for uploading File:CBCResults KP EpicSys.png. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. Even if you created the image yourself, you still need to release it so Wikipedia can use it. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. The article WYTIWis has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No indication of how this might meet notability guidelines. Lacks citations to significant coverage in reliable sources.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. RadioFan (talk) 03:02, 7 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Big data, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion debate, such as at articles for deletion. Under the specified criteria, where an article has substantially identical content to that of an article deleted after debate, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. I42 (talk) 22:11, 21 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. It appears that you have been canvassing—leaving messages on others' talk pages to notify them of an ongoing community decision, debate, or vote. While friendly notices are allowed, they should be limited and nonpartisan in distribution and should reflect a neutral point of view. Please do not post notices which are indiscriminately cross-posted, which espouse a certain point of view or side of a debate, or which are selectively sent only to those who are believed to hold the same opinion as you. Remember to respect Wikipedia's principle of consensus-building by allowing decisions to reflect the prevailing opinion among the community at large. Taiwanese aborigines

[edit]
  • First, and most importantly, I am not getting an overpowering feeling of reliability from your source. If the Chinese actually ate human meat, wouldn't it be documented elsewhere??? Cannibalism is not documented among the Han, AFAIK, so this source is extremely suspect. Verify with more sources, or I will delete in one week two days.
  • Second, if you're gonna add stuff, at least pay attention to the formatting used in the article. Yours is the only reference in the entire article that uses footnote style. Follow the style of the rest of the article. The article is currently at FAR, and your cite was specifically mentioned as a problem... • Ling.Nut 01:52, 17 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
    • If someone else wants to come up with more sources that verify this fact, that would be fine. If I seem emphatic, it's only because this sentence is far more incendiary than average, and far less verified than other statements in the article. It's isn't acceptable to suggest that past mistreatment/abuse of other forms (and of course there has been a lot) by the Han majority justifies perpetuating some sort or myth or propaganda (if that's what it is). Tks. • Ling.Nut 23:24, 20 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
      • Thank you for the kind words on my talk page. If you wanna help, then find a way to prove that two photos on the page (both by Torii Ryūzō) were published outside the U.S. before 1923. Of course they were; but we have to prove it. The two photos are:
        1. The photo atop the page, in the infobox, of a Rukai chief.
        2. The photo captioned "An Atayal tribal woman with a tattoo on her face, a symbol of maturity..."
      • The original source of both is the digital archive of the University of Tokyo, for example here, though they are mirrored in this blog. Tks. • Ling.Nut 00:28, 27 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Durwood Brandon

[edit]

Hi. :) In evaluating the above file, I noticed that you've uploaded several images sourced to Durwood Brandon under public domain. I'm afraid that if you uploaded these images today they'd be tagged for speedy deletion unless Mr. Durwood followed one of the several processes required to verify that he consents to release his photographs. You uploaded these some time ago, I know, but I'm afraid they could still be subject to deletion under that criterion here and on Commons unless permission is supplied (see WP:CSD#F11 for the gory details; it is a criterion applied on both projects). I'm wondering if it is possible to get Mr. Durwood to verify his consent to the release. If he has a web presence, a notice at his website would be sufficient; if not, a permission letter to the Wikimedia Foundation would address all. (See Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission and Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. He would need to specifically identify the images he's permitting.) I don't know if Mr. Durwood is a friend of yours, a colleague or a photographer whose name I should be ashamed not to know, but I'm hoping that filling out the paperwork here won't be too difficult. :D I'm getting ready to travel for the holidays so won't be around for a few, but I am one of the volunteers who processes those permission letters, and I'll be happy to help with the red tape in any way that I can. Merry Christmas, or, alternatively, happy winter festival of your choice. :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 13:07, 23 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference

[edit]

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being minor in the usual way.

For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. With the script in place, you can continue with this functionality indefinitely (its use is governed by WP:MINOR). If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 19:36, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free image File:Sun yat sen money portrait.jpg

⚠

Thanks for uploading File:Sun yat sen money portrait.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Skier Dude (talk) 04:06, 29 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Non-free rationale for File:Scrabble board in play.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Scrabble board in play.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. GB fan 18:03, 11 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

File source problem with File:Grenade training with dummy.jpg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Grenade training with dummy.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.

If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Please refer to the image use policy to learn what images you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. Please also check any other files you have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Hello, My name is Duane Hurst and I recently made a free (non-commercial) English web site to share information with people. I added links to your Wikipedia/Wikimedia freeware pictures (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Taiwan_bunun_dancer.jpg and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Taiwan_bunnun_village.jpg). I also gave credit to you on my web pages for your work. Thank you for sharing with the public. My website is:

http://www.freeenglishsite.com/

I add pictures such as yours to one of the following major sections of my site: 1. World section - contains information and over 10,000 images of every world country and territory. Link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/world/index.htm

2. USA section - contains information and images of every USA state and territory. Link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/world/usa/index.htm

3. English section - "Mel and Wes" lessons in conversation format. Stories are located in various USA states and world countries such as China, England, Germany, Japan, Mexico and Thailand. Each lesson has many slang terms and idioms, which I link to my Slang Dictionary. This eventually will have over 5,000 terms. Currently, it has about 3,000 slang and idioms. I regularly add new lessons and slang terms. Big data

[edit]

Hi Jeremykemp. You haven't been around for over a month, I hope you are well. I see you syarted Big Data, which would indicate that you are knowledgeable on the subject - I am not. I happened to come to the page to read something when I was struck by the unusual lead. I could easily restore it to an earlier version, but am now wondering about the quality of the other edits by the editor who penned that new intro. I am certain you would know. Would you be able to take a look? Thanks, Rui ''Gabriel'' Correia (talk) 08:19, 29 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Image source problem with File:Tsunami animation kalutara large.gif

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading File:Tsunami animation kalutara large.gif.

This image is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such images would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a screenshot of a computer game or movie. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original image must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

If you have uploaded other derivative works, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 02:22, 2 February 2016 (UTC). If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. The article WorldArt Kiosk has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The coverage (references, external links, etc.) does not seem sufficient to justify this article passing Wikipedia:General notability guideline and the more detailed Wikipedia:Notability (companies) requirement. If you disagree and deprod this, please explain how it meets them on the talk page here in the form of "This article meets criteria A and B because..." and ping me back through WP:ECHO or by leaving a note at User talk:Piotrus. Thank you.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. The article Bob Arnot has been proposed for deletion because it appears to have no references. Under Wikipedia policy, this biography of a living person will be deleted after seven days unless it has at least one reference to a reliable source that directly supports material in the article.
