alt text

[edit]

I restored alt text that you removed on the prior edit. It see that the alt text feature may no longer be working, which might be behind the automated removal, but in that case the feature description should be changed as well. Can you clarify what is happening here? — Quondum 05:47, 6 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for catching that mistake. I have checked and the alt text is indeed functional and working. I assumed this not to be the case because it was not mentioned in the other references that I had consulted. Cacycle (talk) 11:29, 6 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Cool. The "feature" that I had in mind was that when the cursor hovered over the image, the alt text would pop up, but on trying to trace it, it seems this must have been a "bug" in my memory (confusion with wikilinks or somesuchlike), and the only functionality mentioned at WP:ALT seems to be working fine. — Quondum 12:29, 6 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That would be title and is actually also supported. Cacycle (talk) 13:33, 6 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks – I took the liberty of adding this detail to Help:Displaying a formula#Rendering. — Quondum 14:56, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Students looking for something to do...

[edit]

In the Wikipedia chemistry project we have occasional problems with students that are assigned by semi-naive teaching assistants to write articles. The problem is that these students and their "mentors" are unsophisticated and the material they seek to submit is often of modest quality from the perspective of notability, sources, and technical details. The question is what kind of on-line Wiki-like projects exist for such people (freshman honor students). Perhaps something that is not quite as technically demanding as the chemistry project. There are dozens of very good but young students at my institution looking for a way to contribute something on-line in a wiki-format. They could for example work on Wikibooks or Wikiversity, writing up gen chem content or such. I confess to being completely ignorant of these venues, but am aware that you are a contributor to them. Do you have any ideas? --Smokefoot (talk) 21:01, 21 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The Wikipedia Library now offering accounts from Cochrane Collaboration (sign up!)

[edit]

Cochrane Collaboration is an independent medical nonprofit organization consisting of over 28,000 volunteers in more than 100 countries. The collaboration was formed to organize medical scholarship in a systematic way in the interests of evidence-based research: the group conducts systematic reviews of randomized controlled trials of health-care interventions, which it then publishes in the Cochrane Library.

Cochrane has generously agreed to give free, full-access accounts to 100 medical editors. Individual access would otherwise cost between $300 and $800 per account. Thank you Cochrane!

If you are stil active as a medical editor, come and sign up :)

[edit]

Thank you for creating helpful editing tools like wikEd and wikEdDiff. They seriously make my life so much easier, and they integrate so well with the editing interface that I honestly sometimes forget they're not a default part of the Wikimedia software. I have an alt account that I use both for editing from public computers and for editing from my Kindle Fire (which sadly, does not like to play with WikEd) and smartphone. Whenever I log into that account, I'm always a little confused about why half my editing interface is gone until I remember that wikEd is "just" an add-on. Thank you for the improvements you have made to my editing. Happy editing, — Preceding signed comment added by Cymru.lass (talkcontribs) 16:42, 7 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Help needed with Anti-Vandal Tool

Propanoic acid LDS

[edit]

The structure you posted, doesnt have a formal charge of 0. There is another possible way to draw the molecular structure of that substance, (lone pair up O, double bond beside C3) which will make the Formal charge =0, this way it will be more correct than your earlier one. Please change it. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.163.107.39 (talk) 11:14, 22 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Are you talking about File:Propionic_acid_chemical_structure.png? What is "LDS"? That structure actually does have a formal charge of 0. Also, the structure does not show any lone pairs. C3 is the terminal carbon and does not have any double bonds. I am really confused, please could you give me more details so that I can address your concerns? RevisionSlider & WikEdDiff interaction

[edit]
Hi! You are receiving this message as it looks like you have a copy of the WikEdDiff user script in your user space on this wiki.

When using the RevisionSlider and WikEdDiff together WikEdDiff will not function correctly when the RevisionSlider is used to load a new diff. This can be fixed by adding a simple hook listener to your copy.

During a deployment slot today the RevisionSlider extension will be turned on as a beta feature on all wikis.

For the first week the RevisionSlider will be deployed with a 'hack' that will mean WikEdDiff will continue to work, but on the 21st and 22nd of September this 'hack' will be removed.

You can find the relevant phabricator ticket here which contains the code that you will need to add to your copy of the script (in most cases). Please also use this ticket for further questions & discussion.

Extended confirmed protection

[edit]

Hello, Cacycle. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

 • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
 • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:48, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

[edit]

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. wikEd Typo fixing

[edit]

Hey there, I'm not sure if we've had this conversation before on IRC, or if that was with someone else, but if we did discuss this already, I forgot what the outcome was. I just wanted to point out that I've made a script that makes the Regex Typo Fixing skip all elements that are not plain text, which contain possible intentional "typos", namely those described on WP:AWB/T#AutoWikiBrowser (AWB). It's a very lightweight script (or at least as lightweight as I could imagine such a script ever being; probably just as heavy as the script you're using right now), so performance should not be an issue. It's also designed to be used in scripts, as it can be used to execute a typo fix by simply running RETF.replace(text) for any text you want.

I hope this helps improve the typo fixing of wikEd. Joeytje50 (talk) 05:16, 14 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

A new user right for New Page Patrollers

[edit]

Hi Cacycle.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Technical news

 • When performing some administrative actions the reason field briefly gave suggestions as text was typed. This change has since been reverted so that issues with the implementation can be addressed. (T34950)
 • Following the latest RfC concluding that Pending Changes 2 should not be used on the English Wikipedia, an RfC closed with consensus to remove the options for using it from the page protection interface, a change which has now been made. (T156448)
 • The Foundation has announced a new community health initiative to combat harassment. This should bring numerous improvements to tools for admins and CheckUsers in 2017.

Cannabinoid structure orientation

[edit]

Nice work on drawing cannabinoid skeletons. However, I think there's a room for an improvement regarding to a consistency. E.g. File:CBC-type cyclization of cannabinoids.png. One might assume that the skeletons in the table in Cannabinoid#Phytocannabinoids are same original orientations. But they are not, if they were, the cyclization in the CBC case would occur at the other OH group, because the cyclization in fact is done on the carboxylic acids (one might assume that it's there but not drawn, like the double bonds). Maybe you were inspired by the mistaken scheme. Regards, —Mykhal (talk) 20:04, 24 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mykhal. If I remember correctly, the scheme was inspired by an extensive review article back in 2006. I am not sure, what you exactly mean - is there data on that particular cyclization? Is there a nice graphical fix (e.g. a fat cyclization indicator from the other OH)? Cacycle (talk) 15:24, 26 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Your draft article, Draft:Tampermonkey

[edit]

Hello, Cacycle. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "Tampermonkey".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}}, {{db-draft}}, or {{db-g13}} code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Thanks for your submission to Wikipedia, and happy editing. Abelmoschus Esculentus (talkcontribs) 11:41, 26 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

[edit]

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The file File:D-lysergic acid.png has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

unused, low-res, no obvious use

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.

Please give me a few days, I am really busy :-) Cacycle (talk) 07:53, 9 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi,
To give you a bit more context: in this edit request, I was asking for a change that we already discussed in 2014. I know that it is just a workaround for some problems you wanted to fix in a better way, but it looks that you had to revert the fix twice. It's still the only detail that blocks frwiki from using the original script.
Here is a direct link to the patch that I propose : Special:Diff/981757769/981758743.
It's not urgent, but in case you have no time at all for the maintenance of this script anymore, please tell us if it's OK for you to let interface administrators deal with edit requests about it.
Thanks!
Orlodrim (talk) 15:36, 9 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
+1 support for adding this setting. Keeping the nbsp literals, or replacing them with normal spaces, makes much more sense than replacing them with entities, at least on the French wiki. Just one nitpick, I'd rather name the setting convertNbspLiteralsToEntities (as "nbsp" here refers to both the literal and the entity). Od1n (talk) 02:02, 11 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, did you get a chance to look at this small change? As noted in the original discussion, I already tested the new version to be sure that the behavior is unchanged unless the new option is explicitly set. Orlodrim (talk) 18:43, 23 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
If you don't have time, could you maybe just agree to let other people evaluate the proposed change? Orlodrim (talk) 21:26, 5 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
If I remember correctly, it was not possible to reliably conserve \xa and at the same time and/or it interferes with some wikEd functions. Cacycle (talk) 22:03, 5 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, exactly. And unfortunately, I don't have a solution to this problem. But as long as this is unsolved, a better compromise for frwiki is to not try to conserve \xa and have it converted to spaces, rather than to (I can explain the details if you're interested).
That's what the option that I propose would do. I'm not claiming that it should be enabled anywhere else, I just would like to have the option in the original script so that no fork is needed.
Orlodrim (talk) 10:47, 6 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It's just a 6-line change, and I checked that it does not change anything by default :) Orlodrim (talk) 20:54, 17 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi,
Sorry to insist. Could you please take a look at my request? You asked me to wait for a few days, but it's been almost two months now.
Alternatively, if you are not interested in maintaining this script, please say so. That's also perfectly fine. Then interface administrators could look at it. However, since you're still occasionally contributing, they won't do that without your agreement.
Orlodrim (talk) 19:01, 1 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi,
Since you did not reply to my last three messages, I assume that you do not want or do not have the time to look at this anymore.
Thus, in 7 days, I will re-open the request that I made 3 months ago on Wikipedia:Interface administrators' noticeboard to apply this change on your script.
Let me know if you have any objection.

Minor fixes to userscripts

[edit]

Hey Cacycle, it looks like you've got some user scripts in use by others that have bare javascript global wg-style variables. These are phab:T72470 deprecated, and while I don't think there's a timeline for their removal, it's been that way for a while. It's usually a straightforward fix, all uses need to use mw.config.get, such as converting wgTitle to mw.config.get('wgTitle'). There's some more info at mw:ResourceLoader/Migration guide (users)#Global wg variables. I can take care of cleaning them up for you if you like, or give you a full list if you want to handle it, just let me know! ~ Amory (utc) 11:56, 29 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. How we will see unregistered users

[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

 1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
 2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.
