Why is the page disambig'd as (cruiser)? Is there another CSS Florida? If so, it should be added to the list of CSN ships. Jinian 15:28, 26 Nov 2004 (UTC)
There was another CSS Florida, a gunboat later converted to a blockade runner. The other Florida will be added shortly. McMullen 21:25, 28 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- Thanks. Any reason that the ship type disambig is used? The ship project page recommends launch year, so CSS Florida (1862). Jinian 22:35, 28 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- They were both launched in 1862, so year of launch doesn't disambiguate. The Confederate Navy had a somewhat confusing habit of having multiple ships with the same name in service at the same time, so disambiguating by ship type is sometimes necessary. McMullen 22:39, 29 Nov 2004 (UTC)
The article on the CSS Tacony says it was captured by the CSS Clarence, not the CS Florida. Which article is correct? 75.71.201.48 20:22, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
Correction regarding the Florida's sinking
[edit]According to Clive Cussler's book The Sea Hunters, and his research that went into the book, the famous CSS Florida was deliberately scuttled by Union forces, rather than allow her to be returned to Brazil and the Confederates. Saying that she was hit by another vessel was just a cover story. At dinner a decade after the war, Admiral Porter privately admitted to the former captain of the Florida (a friend by then) that he had ordered his saboteur (and engineer who approached and left the vessel under cover of darkness via rowboat) to "open the sea cocks and not leave the engine room until the water was up to his chin". The Admiral said he thought it fitting that she be scuttled over the same spot where the CSS Virginia sunk the USS Cumberland in the Battle of Hampton Roads. --208.116.232.47 (talk) 18:25, 10 October 2008 (UTC)
