Does anyone have Jayakanthan's date of birth? I need it for the article on him in Vikipedio, the Esperanto Wikipedia (http://eo.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gjanpith). Thanks in anticipation! Giridhar 08:31, 20 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Google says, April 24, 1934. --Rrjanbiah 08:45, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Thank you! (or Dankon! as one says in Esperanto :) Giridhar 08:54, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Deccan Herald

[edit]

FWIW, Deccan Herald says Jayakanthan married a dalit woman. Sounds like, it's copied from this article. --Rrjanbiah 09:01, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Jnanapith Award

[edit]

I think Jayakanthan was awarded the "Jnanapith Award" for the translation of Romain Rolland's biography of Mahatma Gandhi. The name of the book is "Vazhavaikka Vandha Gandhi". But it is written in the article as "His Jnanpith award winning novel "Hara, Hara Sankara" is yet another controversial as it is pro Sankara cult.". Is this correct ? - Santhoshguru 04:19, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)

The English-Wikipedia article on Jnanpith says that since 1982 the Jnanpith is awarded for "overall contribution to Indian literature". It is no longer for a single work by the writer. So that sentence (that Jayakanthan won the award for "Hara, Hara Sankara") should perhaps be removed. Giridhar 08:54, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Yes, Giridhar you are right. I have removed the sentence. -Santhoshguru 03:48, 29 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Jayakanthan's innovative contribution to Narrative Theory / Narratology / Narrative studies.

[edit]
Jayakanthan's short story 'agnipprevesam'was one of the most controversial short stories of the early sixties. Jayakanthan took his critics head on for some years. Finally he came up with a novel 'silanerangalil sila manithargal',developed on the story. The difference is that Jaykanthan changed the controversial closure of the original short story and gave it the conventional closure which becomes the opening of the novel. The novel was made into a film much later and bagged awards. The original story was embedded in the novel and the heroine, Ganga, and her mother feel that they should have dealt with the rape of Ganga as done in the short story. It is important to note here that the original short story did not name any character. Ganga was known only as 'she'.As far as my knowledge goes no writer has attempted a reversal of the closure of story to open up newer possibilities. Also an earlier work getting embedded in a later work is an innovative narratological technique. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nagarajan1946 (talkcontribs) 08:50, 4 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Translations to other languages

[edit]

Can anyone translate Jayakanthan from English Wikipedia? He has written many short stories of Russian in Tamil and he loved Russians too and invited as a state guest to Russia. Thanks in advance! -தமிழ்க்குரிசில் 15:09, 17 October 2012 (UTC)

The answer would be Джеякандан. There is an entry on Дандапани Джеякандан in the official literary encyclopedia published in Moscow in 1978: Краткая литературная энциклопедия. Т. 9. — 1978, (The Short Literary Encyclopedia, Volume 9, Moscow, 1978)([1]). It was written by Vladimir A. Makarenko ([2]) who introduced Jayakanthan to the Russian-speaking audience. Jayakanthan's work was translated into Russian and included in collections of short stories:
  • Свет в храме. М., 1971 (Light in the Temple. Moscow, 1971)
